Offbeat Careers - Article by Farzad Minoo Damania in Parsi Times

You can read the entire transcript of the article below:

Are you bored of conventional careers such as engineering, medicine, chartered accountancy and management? Then it is time to think outside the box and consider an OFFBEAT career? Let your PASSION meet PROFESSION …
Choosing an unconventional or offbeat career is slowly becoming a new trend in our society. But, before getting into an offbeat career, here are some factors that you should consider:

Family Support: It generally takes longer to settle in an offbeat career than in a conventional career. Hence it is very important to have the necessary parental and family support before plunging into an offbeat career. Have an open and healthy discussion with your family regarding the pros and cons of that career field.

Future Scope: Evaluate the scope and trend of the career you want to get into. You need to critically analyze the future scope, demand –supply and potential of that career option in India and abroad.

Monetary Aspects: You also need to look into the monetary and commercial implications. You should check whether this career will provide the necessary growth in your abilities and finances in future.  Also, offbeat careers do not have a regular pattern of income, so you need to plan your investments, lifestyle and living accordingly.
Stress Tolerance: Since you are entering into an unconventional career, there will be times where you will feel low, lost, frustrated and directionless. You should possess strong mental and emotional strength to ride such stressful times. Family and friend support can be of significant help.

Groom your Passion: Passion alone cannot give you success. You need to undertake necessary training or courses in that field.  This will help in the long term to pursue higher goals in life.

Ability to adapt with time: It is very critical to have a flexible and adaptable approach in your career, since you will have to continuously deal with changes in preferences of public, unknown economic conditions and new technological advances.
So, why not move away from the regular stereo-type and traditional careers, and explore the abundant prospects of offbeat careers. Stand out from the rest!!!

  5. Congratulations on your article getting published! Of all the careers, wedding planning takes the least learning and rewards the best! I know a 'henna artist' here in the US who charges $1000-2000 plus flight tickets for weddings!

    1. Oh yes Chaitanya. There are people who make good money in offbeat careers. Your start might be slow and there could be resistance from family, but if things go well then these can be high paying options...

  6. Thanks Farzad for writing about off beat careers too. There is a typo in one option. The word 'conservationist' has been replaced by 'conversationalist' by mistake I think.

  11. Hi Farzad. Real nice article. Have you read the book "Risky is the New Safe" by Randy Gage? Your article reminded me of the book. We are living in a constantly changing socio-economic era. And so called 'safe-career's are going to be (if not already) are most risky. Technology is replacing many well known jobs forever. So it's very important for people to open up their mind for offbeat careers.

Internet has made it very easy for anyone to learn about any offbeat topic and also start a career around it. There are freelancing options (using portals like www.fiverr.com ) and also one can teach online (using portals like www.udemy.com ).

I will also recommend Network Marketing as a very much viable offbeat career option. One can start with very small capital, zero experience and work for 7-10 hours/week and build a profitable business in 3-5 years. Business & life lessons one learn from it are more valuable than the money itself. ( word of caution: it's not a get-rich-quick scheme. It's a real career. It takes time to learn & then some more to succeed).
